Profiles of Nepali artists, entrepreneurs, athletes, scientists and public figures.

Nepal's public memory is unusually concentrated around a few fields. Politics after unification, mountaineering after 1953, and literature written in Nepali between the 1930s and the 1970s dominate textbooks and public monuments alike. Understanding who is remembered, and why, is a quick way to understand what the country values.
Prithvi Narayan Shah is the founding figure of the modern state: his Gorkha campaign absorbed the Kathmandu Valley kingdoms in 1768–69 and produced a single polity. Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, usually called B.P. Koirala, became the first elected prime minister after the 1959 election and remains a reference point for democratic politics. Girija Prasad Koirala served repeatedly as prime minister and was central to the 2006–2008 transition that ended the monarchy. Madan Bhandari, a communist ideologist, is remembered for the doctrine of people's multiparty democracy and died in a road accident in 1993.
Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest with Edmund Hillary in 1953, and is claimed by both Nepal and India as one of their own. Pasang Lhamu Sherpa became the first Nepali woman to summit Everest in 1993 and died on the descent. Apa Sherpa holds a record number of Everest summits and built a public profile around environmental clean-ups. Mountaineering is not a footnote in Nepal; it is a national industry and a source of civic pride.
Laxmi Prasad Devkota is widely regarded as the country's foremost poet, best known for the epic Muna Madan. Parijat wrote novels and poetry that gave women's inner lives a central place in Nepali letters. Bhupi Sherchan brought a spare, modern voice to Nepali poetry. Their work, written in Nepali, is still taught and quoted.
